PG Renewables’ Services

PG Renewables provides nearshore and offshore UXO / EOD services to support offshore wind developers and marine asset owners / operators.

Our extensive, in-house UXO investigation and mitigation capabilities enable us to be respectful of the marine environment and responsive to our clients’ needs. Utilising ROVs and experienced EOD divers, we safely manage items of UXO in all conditions – from fully intact to extensively corroded, exposed to completely buried, with diverse fillings and in all types of turbidity.

Ensuring safety, identifying risks.

UXO Investigation

Our UXO investigation services cover reacquisition, excavation and identification.
01

Reacquisition

We reacquire pUXO using the latest magnetic and / or acoustic survey equipment (Innovatum Smart-Search and Oceanscan TSS 440) to map the seabed, detect anomalies and provide high-resolution imagery to help inform identification.

02

Excavation

Dependent on client preferences and metocean conditions, we offer a range of methods to safely approach and successfully excavate fully and partially buried targets including diver-operated and ROV suction dredging.

03

Identification

By collating and analysing a number of inputs including a target’s size, shape, acoustic signature and location, our experts are able to confidently determine whether or not an object is a confirmed UXO.

04

Collaboration

Following identification, we work closely with our clients to discuss potential options before agreeing an appropriate mitigation solution based on the unique features of their project (e.g. environmental considerations, time constraints, weather windows, proximity of nearby infrastructure etc.) and the risk posed by the UXO (size, condition etc.). Solutions include relocation to a wet storage area using our proprietary remote ordnance lifting system (ROLS), or disposal using our Barracuda low or high order variant. We provide assistance with securing appropriate licenses and consents required to implement the chosen mitigation solution.

Reducing risks, preventing harm.

UXO Mitigation

We provide our clients with a comprehensive range of low noise UXO mitigation options to safeguard the marine environment whilst achieving project objectives.
01

Relocation

Protecting marine wildlife is central to our mitigation philosophy. That’s why we advocate for UXO to be relocated away from the worksite to a designated area for ongoing curation and management. This approach removes the hazard and clears the way for offshore construction, without risking noise-related harm to sea life.

Our proprietary, Remote Ordnance Lifting System (ROLS) enables us to offer clients a range of proven UXO relocation options tailored to specific needs. We are the only company whose specialists have relocated more than 350 items of UXO.

02

Low Order

Where relocation is not viable, we are able to provide low-order UXO disposal as a quieter alternative to traditional UXO clearance methods. By avoiding the need for detonation, low-order deflagration removes the obstruction whilst minimising environmental impacts including sound exposure and sound pressure levels which may prove harmful to marine wildlife. Low order is useful for disposing of smaller items of UXO, for selective disruption and as a cost-efficient way of conducting multiple disposals simultaneously. It is a technique favoured by navies around the world.

03

High Order

In situations where it is not possible to relocate UXO or mitigate it using low-order techniques, we have the ability to perform high-order UXO clearance responsibly. The high order UXO method removes the risk of unintentional detonation of legacy munitions which may cause harm to life, infrastructure and assets.

We conduct controlled, high order detonations in accordance with licence / permit requirements, seeking to minimise environmental impact by deploying noise mitigation devices including Acoustic Deterrent Device (ADD), Passive Acoustic Monitoring System (PAMS), Fish Scaring Charge Deployment and bubble curtains.

To date, we have a record of zero malfunctions, misfires, or accidents.

Reducing risks, preventing harm.

Seabed Rectification

This may involve re-surveying, mitigating hazards, and ensuring compliance to confirm a site is safe for offshore wind development or marine construction.

Restoration

Our intervention methodologies always focus on avoiding or minimising environmental impacts to the greatest extent possible. Once a confirmed UXO has been cleared, we recover any resulting device remnants to rehabilitate and restore the integrity of the subsea ecosystem prior to completing an ‘as-left’ survey. All remnants retrieved following a clearance operation, are responsibly managed using an authorised UXO waste treatment and disposal centre.

Reducing risks, preventing harm.
